SNOW DAY!

With a whopping 1.5 inches of snow, the city of Nashville has deemed it a snow day. It started snowing late Saturday night/early Sunday morning and did not stop until about 9pm last night. And in all that craziness, we got less than 2 inches.

We all know how much this apartment cannot stand Tennessean drivers. They are awful on a typical day. However, throw some snow into that mix.. and it gets crazy. This is no exaggeration. Liz and I wanted to get some holiday books for the kids (Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Las Pasadas) so we drove to the library around 3pm. There was powder, not snow at this point. We saw an SUV facing the wrong direction on the exit ramp. I'm still not sure how this happened.

Spencer and I both had plans last night - I was having dinner with my Learning Team and he at the Whole Foods holiday party. Well, it was canceled and we had no food for dinner. So, we figured, we'd order pizza. Nope. Papa Johns and Dominos refused to deliver.

Okay, so we figure, we're Northerns.. we'll drive somewhere for a nice supper on Sunday evening. We get the inch of snow off the car and someone stops us. He tells us that apparently he cannot get up the hill and that we shouldn't leave the complex. We sort of laugh and say he's probably from Alabama or something.

We turn right out of our complex onto Elmington. We drive slowly and carefully through the unploughed and unsalted roads. Did I mention that the state of TN does not believe in salt trucks? So.. we are driving up the hill no problem. Mind you, it's been one block. We get to the stop sign and realize there are not 1, not 2, but three stalled cars that cannot make it up the hill. They are physically incapable of making a left or right hand turn. They are blocking our way to food. It is impossible for us to get around them, so we decide we'll head back down the hill and go down the other street for food.

Think again. We drive down the block and make a right hand turn. As we are turning, we see a van about 100 feet away slide right down a "hill", through the stop sign and slam into the curb. And then, the SUV right behind it followed suit and him them. We made sure they were okay and decided, maybe we'll make some pasta and call it a day. We can drive, but no one else can. Plus, there is NO salt.

Well, it ends up that our friend Kelly totaled her car at that very same stop light about 20 minutes beforehand. She is fine, but her car is off its alignment and therefore, it's better to get it towed to a junk yard and call it a day.

When we got home, we got the call that school was canceled. So what did a bunch of teachers decide was a good decision? Put on some warm clothes and head over to the field and play some tackle-in-the-snow football! Now, you'd think people would go easy because the ground is covered in ice and snow. Nope. We are pretty sure Kelly got a concussion from a collision with Spencer. Cari is bruised and I got clotheslined. Mir was frozen. Declan and Ben did not hold back. AND Mr. Fowler made a brief appearance, bundled up like a little snowman. He has never had a snow day before!

We walked over to the cottage and watched elf, drank hot chocolate, and laughed for the rest of the night with the rest of the crew. I also convinced several of our friends to participate in the Polar Bear Plunge in February. It's a bunch of teachers and friends, so if you have a cool name for us, please let me know. We are thinking we'll dress up like pirates or something for the plunge.

Today has been a lazy snow day :) I marked off SO many things from our to-do list! Winter break in t-minus 2.5 instructional days!

p.s. Please say an extra prayer for Jess while she is in Israel this week!
